Cloud Lesson to Learn from Southwest Airlines

Southwest airlines uses only Boeing 737 model planes. One model means, one single pilot training curiculam, one single maintanance crew training curiculam, and one single maintainance parts. This uniformity helped them save time, cost and effort in maintenance.

It seemed like a smart business plan until last week when one of the 737 engine blew up mid-air killing a passenger.

Southwest is now cancelling 40 flights suspecting similar problems.

This raises the importance of multi-cloud strategy for software companies migrating to cloud.

In the event of failure with one vendor, we can minimize the impact by moving our apps to another vendor.

According to an survey conducted by RightScale.com in 2018, more than 81% of the enterprises already have multi-cloud strategy. Not necessarily meaning companies are already deploying a single app to multiple vendors, atleast, they have opened accounts. These multiple accounts will facilitate the multi-cloud stratergy, as companies do not have to fight their management for a new vendor.

On an average, companies are using 5 cloud vendors. AWS, Azure, Google cloud, IBM cloud, Oracle cloud, and Alibaba cloud are the top vendors.

AWS is leading provider of the cloud, followed by Azure, and Google cloud.
